Inter-School Challenge 2018 Results
On Aug 14, 2018The statewide INTER-SCHOOL CHALLENGE, organised by Tenpin Bowling Association of Queensland (TBAQ) in August each year, is a unique competition enabling primary and secondary students to pit their skills in the popular sport of tenpin bowling against teams from all around Queensland.
The Inter-School Challenge is staged at several Centres in three Zones, with teams of three players eligible to register in either the Secondary or Primary school division. Students bowl four games in the final and are provided with a handicap based on their grade. To make things fairer, players who already bowl league or are representative bowlers start from scratch (0 handicap).
An increased number of teams lined up this year with some impressive scores posted by players ranging in age from as young as 9 up to 18.
Cairns bowlers Brooke Miller, Harry Leersen and Mitchell Parsons from Edge Hill State School topped the Primary school scratch division while Bundaberg’s Walkervale State Primary School overtook Toowoomba East State School by just four pins to claim second place. Maryborough’s Granville State School team of Sean Cordie, Bronson and Seth Brown won the Primary handicap division.
The Gold Coast’s Helensvale State High School’s team of Brenton Moyes, Matthew Purser and Star Polina narrowly edged out Cairns State High School to win the Secondary school scratch division, with Bundaberg’s Kepnock State High School finishing third. Maryborough State High School’s Tate Peterson, Kye Bryce and Michelle Johnston took out the honours in the handicap division, while a mere two pins separated St. Augustine’s College Cairns and another Maryborough State High School team when scores were tallied for second and third place.
15 year-old Bailey Miller from Cairns High won back to back high-score honours, topping the Secondary school All-Stars team again this year with an impressive 884 over four games, with Matthew Purser from Helensvale High close behind on 839. Woree State School’s Stephen Carr on 717, fellow Cairns bowler Liam Johnson from Redlynch State College on 711 and Helensvale High School’s Star Polina on 706 rounded out the coveted All-Stars team in this year’s Inter-School Challenge.
The Primary division All-Stars featured two players from Edge Hill State School in Cairns, Mitchell Parsons on 637 and Brooke Miller on 550. Toowoomba East State School’s Cody Walker also made the All-Stars, posting 520 when he and his triplet brothers Blake and Shannon competed at Zone Bowling Richlands at the weekend. Young players from Bundaberg’s Walkervale State Primary and Bundaberg East State Primary, Abby Smith and Ryan Hack earned the remaining All-Star honours.
Bowlers in the top three placegetting teams in their centre are awarded medallions, and the State Champion team names are added to the four Inter-School perpetual Shields.
Challenge organiser Linton Chataway from TBAQ today thanked all participating schools and the team coordinators who work tirelessly to organise and prepare their teams for this event each year, together with the bowling centres who support the Inter-School Challenge competition. “It was good to see everybody enjoying themselves and to get feedback from many centres reporting outstanding achievements and great displays of sportsmanship. “We’re looking forward to staging an even bigger competition in both divisions next year,” he added.
